Inspiration & Background

01.

Social and cultural pressures

An ideal image of the female body is often conveyed through the media, adverts and other social media methods, and this image is usually of a slim, well-proportioned body. This widely disseminated ideal image puts pressure on women to conform to this standard to be considered beautiful and successful.

02.

Influence of family or friends:

What family members or friends say or do may also influence a woman's body self-perception. If those around them frequently comment on or criticize their own or others' weight and appearance, this may increase women's dissatisfaction and anxiety about their bodies.

03.

Lifestyle changes:

Unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise in modern lifestyles may cause dissatisfaction and anxiety about body image.

04.

Competition or comparison:

The fast flow of social media and carefully selected and retouched photos on the internet may make women feel inferior thus creating anxiety.

05.

Psychological factors:

Body image disorders or other mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety, may also cause or exacerbate body image anxiety.

Personal experience:

The creative process also incorporates an adaptation of the director's personal experience.

critical reflection

During this intense two-day shoot, we encountered a rare heavy rainstorm in Sydney, which was a completely unexpected challenge. This experience, although fraught with difficulties, has also greatly enriched my professional experience and provided me with valuable lessons for my future filmmaking. This is my first film in Australia and it holds a very special meaning for me. It not only tells my personal story, but also touches on the reality of the lives of Asian women in general.

During the production process, I noticed an interesting phenomenon: women's clothing sizes seem to be getting smaller and smaller on Taobao, a major online shopping platform in China. This not only reflects a certain trend in the clothing industry, but also relates to our society's expectations of female beauty. And during the casting process, I found it difficult to find two actresses with significant differences in body types. I was deeply surprised by the number of slim women who nominated themselves for the role of Susan1. This contrasting reality inspired me to complete this film, which I hope will be thought-provoking, especially for women who are experiencing body image anxiety, and I hope they will find empathy and relief through this film.

Through this film, I hope to not only explore and present the challenges of women in modern society, but also inspire the audience to reflect on the existing cultural and social standards. My goal is to use film as an art form to give a voice to those who are struggling under unreasonable social expectations, and to prompt us to think together about how to build a more tolerant and understanding social environment.
